2012 Predictions for Cars around the Globe

The 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit gave us a taste of the year to come in cars. Here are our 10 prognostications for automotive trends.

There have been no great leaps in styling the Corvette since 1968.The new C7 probably won’t be any different. There most likely won’t be any radical split-rear-window as a nod to the ’60s. A V-8 with around 450 hp will probably live under the car’s hood.

The revitalised Dodge Dart might be one of the biggest hits for 2012. It would be a solid competitor for the Focus and Cruze. It will be available with two naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 1.4-liter motor also with 160 hp. Transmission choices include a manual gearbox and an automated dual clutch manual with a combined rating of 40 mpg in testing.

Experts are not predicting a wild increase in oil prices this year. Plug-in Hybrid technology took many years to resonate with consumers, so its predicted EVs will continue to stagnate for the rest of the year and probably beyond 2013.

Toyota and Honda,traditionally hit makers, have had a difficult few years. But a slew of new Japanese cars are coming this year including the smaller Scion FR-S sports car, Toyota Prius C,new Honda Accord and Acura NSX supercar. Japan is sure to fight back.

Its  expected that the new Ford Fusion and Cadillac ATS, both revealed at the Detroit Auto Show this week, will be the cars everyone will be talking about this year. Infact, they look so good on paper, they’ll surely end up sweeping all the automotive awards.

At 106 mpg city rating and 92 mpg highway rating the Nissan Leaf comes in as a runner up to the top spot. Nissan claims a real-world range of 70 miles. A 220 volt outlet can charge the car in 7 hours, with a special quick-charger that can deliver up to an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes.

Honda CR-Z or Hyundai Sonata Hybrid both have an estimated combined 37 mpg. Honda offers a sporty coupe at a comfortable price range while Hyundai offers a full sedan with great gas mileage. Honda CR-Z: 35 City/39 Hwy (37 Combined),  priced at $19,545. 1.5-liter, 4-Cylinder engine with 122 hp. 0-60 mph in 8.2 secs. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: 35 City/40 Hwy(37 avg.), priced at $25,850. 2.4-liter, 4-Cylinder engine with 206 hp. 0-60 mph in 9.2 secs.
